The Italian Trade Agency’s Innovation Days 2019 edition took off the week of November 10th in Salt Lake City, Utah offering over 3,000 researchers and academics, who took part in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)’s Conference annual conference International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE), several opportunities to engage with Italian researchers and industrialists. IMECE is ASME’s largest research and development conference which althrough focused primarily on mechanical engineering, also encompasses perspectives from many engineering disciplines connecting with thousands of peer researchers at a global level. This year the Italian Trade Agency not only exhibited at the conference at booth #400 but was this year’s conference diamond sponsor.

A special round table program and reception was organized by the Agency, entitled The Italian Way to Advanced Manufacturing, on November 13, 2019, at 18:00, in Salon D, first floor, of the Marriott Hotel, in Salt Lake City. The round table included an exciting panel discussion by ASME members and industry experts from Italy on novel technologies coming out of Italy and the best practices for collaborations between Italian and US companies and research centers in the area of advanced manufacturing.

The round table included the following panelists illustrating Italian best practices in collaboration.

  • Giulio Busulini, Fabbrica Intelligente (BIO / SITE)

  • Paolo Calefati, Prima Industrie (BIO)

  • Martin Kinsella, COMAU (BIO)

  • Marco Petrolo, Polytechnic of Turin (BIO)

  • Marco Rossoni, Polytechnic of Milan (BIO)

The moderator of the panel was Marriner H. Merrill (BIO), ASME board member for the Advanced Manufacturing Track at the conference and a researcher in multifunctional materials at the US Naval Research Laboratories.

Conference attendees were also able to attend the Advanced Manufacturing Track Reception, sponsored by the Italian Trade Agency. During the reception the Advanced Manufacturing Track presented its Best Paper Awards.

Italian delegates and panelists attended several site visits where they held meetings to build relationships with several US counterparts within advanced manufacturing research and related industry complexes.

This program focused on advanced manufacturing is part of the Agency’s Innovation Days USA 2019 series of events. Now in its second edition, Innovation Days USA provides a number of opportunities for US companies and universities to engage with Italian solution providers in renewable energy, life sciences, aerospace, start-ups and advanced manufacturing.
